-- Tony P., Second Class, Nov. 2013
About 20 people have been to the Anza Borrego. My adventure started like this. Aaron, Joseph, and I were in Mr. Tung’s car. It took about 2 hours to arrive Anza Borrego campsite. In a sudden, the car stopped at in the middle of the dessert. We had to wait for Mr. A and other senior scouts. Unfortunately, Mr. A’s car was far away from our location and the outside temperature was really low, so everyone was shivering. After we waited for 20~30 minutes, Nic’s dad’s car came to us with Daniel and Nic. It was so late that everyone started to sleep. Aaron and I were slept in a SUV trunk. On the next day, I woke up almost exact time with Aaron. Many senior scouts came to campsite and scouts were talking to each other while eating some food for breakfast. When everyone was awake and packed stuff, we went to Coyote Canyon for a short hike.
Everyone went to the hike, which was pretty long but kind of flat trail. There was a stream that let us make a dam with a rock and be able to clean water. After making a dam, we walked in the stream. It felt cool but easier to walk. It was so fun that we forgot the fact that it was already lunch time. When we started to walk in the stream, Mr. A hiked for himself. We lost him at almost last part of the stream. After we ate our lunch, we changed hiking shoes and followed the original trail. Finally, we found Mr. A and people could smile with relief. Now we decided to go back to the car through the shortcut Mr. A found. Even though the shortcut was full of spiky and sharp leaves, we did well in that place.
We came back to campsite safely and all people were tired.
We started to unpack our stuff from each bag and put on the tarp. Daniel, Joseph and I were in charge of cooking for district and Billy and Rohit were our supervisors. We prepared spaghetti and burger with some chips. Those were really good and even amazing. After we finished dinner, we played card games for a while and I went to sleep with Aaron, Joseph, Darren, and Daniel.
On the next day, we ate some bacon for breakfast, and then we started to do ‘Compass Course’. There were 3 people in a group and people had to use only the compass and direction. In my group, there were Eugene and Aaron. I thought we were the last but we got the second place! After that, for completing one item of second class advancement, I learned about how to recognize the map symbols and how to make a fire with safety. I did really hard with Aaron, so we could finish one second class requirement. After the advancement, we went to theater that ran the movie of animals which lived around that area and about how they lived in different seasons in their habitat. We saw some stuffed animals. Fur was soft and feeling good. At last, we restarted to hike for last 1.5 miles. After few minutes, it became so dark that we barely could see the trail. Therefore, we lost trail many times and had a hard time to arrive to the parking lot. On the other hand, Mr. A and some other adults were good at finding the right trail. I am sure that we are getting better to read the map and find the right trail like Mr. A and adults.
Finally, we came back to Irvine safely with lots of good experience and wonderful memory.
Hopefully, all people in the troop don’t miss this great trip for the next year.
