The BSA Sequoia Council Camp Chawanakee was founded on Shaver Lake in 1946 by a grant from the Federal, the Civilian Conservation Corps, and Southern California Edison Power Company. It offers one-week summer camp sessions for boy scouts to develop individual skills and teamwork through merit badges and rank advancement.
Shaver Lake was formed by the construction of the Shaver Lake Dame which was built by Southern California Edison in 1927. Part of the lake water feeds into Stevenson Creek for fish and wildlife, the majority of the water is diverted to Big Creek for Southern California Edison Big Creek Hydroelectric project.
