June Lake is a 7621 ft elevation sub-alpine lake in the Inyo National Forest. It is one of four lakes inside the June Lake Loop. The looped valley was created by glacier activity, and June Lake was created when a basin was filled with spring water.
In 1915, a rail tramway and a roadway were constructed due to the sudden interest in hydroelectric power. The Rush Creek Hydroelectric Project was created, and the development continued through 1917. Because of a road constructed from U.S. Highway 395 to Silver Lake, which made development possible, it allowed automobile tourists to come to see the excellent views, making June Lake a popular tourist destination. A ski resort was created by W.C. "Bud" Hayward in 1961 due to the popularity of skiing.
At June Lake, the area is full of trails and fishing, and skiing is extremely popular in the winter.
