Bighorn Mine

View Bighorn Mine in the Google Map

In 1895, while hunting bighorn sheep, Charlie Vincent discovered the gold mine around the east slope of Mt. Baden-Powell. Gold mining was operated from 1895 to 1981. Built in 1903, the 1.8 miles Bighorn Mine trail was used as the wagon road for gold mining. A 60 stamp mill complex was built in 1906 at the end of the trail.

Mine Gulch accrossing the Pine Mountain Ridge feeds the East Fork of the San Gabriel River and merges with the San Gabriel River at the base of Pine Mountain Ridge. The runoff water from the Bighorn mine feeds directly into the Gulch.
