Blair L., Second Class, Jul. 2015
Although the first day was extremely boring, the first thing that we did on this trip was actually really fun. The heat was almost unbearable and so a hike in the Narrows was perfect. Although it took a while for everyone to arrive at beautiful Zion National park, we were able to hike a little part of the Narrows which as you can tell from the picture, is a shaded hike in the river.
When we awoke, we rode the shuttle to Temple of Sinawava to do the Angels Landing hike. A strenuous 5 mile hike, this may seem like a scary hike in all of the pictures but in real life, it’s a pretty easy hike. After the hike, we drive for a while to arrive at Wahweap Marina, just a couple miles from our houseboats.
On the dawn of the third day, we load the boats for departure, loading it full of fuel, food, and clothes. Although the day was spent on driving the boats, we were able to do some of the easy competitions (slide relay and hoop toss).
The fourth day passed in a blur as people began to learn different water activities. And as tension rises between the two boats, the competitions become more extreme. But the Icebergs slowly pull ahead in points. But many more competitions are to come.
Halfway through the boat expedition, we arrive at our destination, Rainbow Bridge National Monument. The hike there is quite easy (just really hot) but the view is astonishing. Also, today was the last day for competitions and miraculously the Titanic pulled ahead and drew the win.
But perhaps the most memorable part about this trip is probably the fishing. I tried out for a couple of times with no luck but then I put on some bait and I almost instantly got a well sized catfish. I guess the best advice I have is to be patient and don’t tangle the rope otherwise you’re going to have a bad time.
On the second to last day, we awake next to the river at Lee’s ferry, the only way to get across the river before Grand Canyon. But before you jump into the waters, that water is freezing cold. After a quick dive, we drove for two hours to the Grand Canyon.
This picture was taken from the vista point that you can access from the visitor center and was taken on the last day of this very memorable trip. I know that there will be many more summer camps after this but this trip might not be happening anytime soon.
